Continuing Medical Education (CME)
The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. ASCRS takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.
CME Credit
The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each physician should claim credit commensurate with the extent of his/her participation in the activity.
Physicians can claim CME credit up to the maximum listed above for attending the Physicians Program, the ASOA Practice Management Program, the Optional Educational Workshops, or a combination thereof.
Educational Objectives
Ophthalmologists attending this meeting will:
- Explain the evaluation of patients with cataract and evolving indications for surgery
- Describe preferred practices in cataract removal and intraocular lens implantation
- Discuss the management of refractive errors at the time of cataract surgery
- Evaluate devices currently available or under development for astigmatism and presbyopia management
- Contrast techniques and devices that may be used to evaluate patients before and after corneal refractive surgery
- Describe preferred practices in corneal refractive surgery including enhancements
- Apply the information provided on new surgical techniques and contemporary treatment to clinical practice
- Describe research being conducted currently to further the art of cataract and refractive surgery

At the conclusion of this program, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the advanced phacoemulsification systems being utilized in cataract surgery today
- Compare and contrast 3 high technology IOLs currently available
- Describe the present applications of customized laser refractive surgery and the process of determining the appropriate procedure for each patient
- Discuss the indications and the options available for refractive lens exchange patients
- Describe medical and surgical regimens used to treat endophthalmitis
- Identify 3 sources of TASS
- Discuss nursing interventions to prevent endophthalmitis and TASS
- Identify early influences on the development of the Nursing Profession
- Lists 3 abilities that can assure success in a nursing leadership role
- Describe at least 3 ophthalmic conditions that can complicate cataract surgery
- Discuss how a surgical intervention may differ from the standard cataract extraction in the presence of co-existing pathology
- Discuss the collaborative role the ophthalmic registered nurse performs in the care of the cataract patient
- Identify 3 specific nursing interventions that could lead to improved outcomes for the cataract patient
- Differentiate clinical presentations of complications in cataract surgery
- Discuss the challenges and the nursing role when the unexpected occurs in anterior segment cases in the operating room
